Firefighters search pond near Olympia Fields hospital

Daily Southtown (Sunday) - - NEWS - -Staff Report, Daily Southtown

Dozens of first responders were involved in a search Friday afternoon outside St James Hospital in Olympia Fields after a report of two people possibly being in a retention pond, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Two people had been seen near the pond on the south side of the hospital at about 3:30 p.m., Maria Ramos said.

The pond was iced over and a crack was later spotted, although there was no indication anyone had fallen in, she said.

Out of “an overabundance of caution,” a search involving “a very large response” from area emergency agencies got underway then called off at about 6 p.m., Ramos said.

She said a search could resume early Saturday, but only if there was a more definitive indication anyone was in the pond, which is adjacent to 203rd Street. The hospital is just southeast of Crawford and Vollmer roads.
