A Harvey landlord has been charged with firstdegree murder in the fatal shooting of a man who was helping one of his tenants move, police said.

C.L. Buchanan, 57, was arrested Wednesday and charged in the slaying of Charles Hartzol in Harvey

earlier this month, police Chief Robert Collins said.

Hartzol, 60, of Riverdale, had been helping a tenant move out of Buchanan’s rental property at 14432 Des Plaines St., the evening of May 3 when an argument started between Harztol, his family members and the landlord, the chief said.

During the argument on the home’s front porch, Buchanan pulled out a gun and shot Hartzol in the chest, Collins said.

Hartzol was pronounced dead a short time later at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Buchanan, who fled the scene, remained on the lam until being arrested Wednesday in Lansing with the assistance of the FBI, Collins said. The Cook County state’s attorney’s office lists his address in Chicago.

He was ordered held without bond Friday and is due back in court Aug. 3, state’s attorney’s office.
