Legislation would help to help prevent suicides

-

September is Suicide Prevention Month and it’s a reminder that we be there for each other and take steps to prevent suicide. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s theme for the month is to #KeepGoing, by taking simple actions to safeguard our mental health and save lives. From learning the warning signs for suicide and what to do if you are worried someone is struggling to bringing education programs to your community, we can all learn new ways to help each other save lives. One action I’m taking is to urge my public officials to prioritize suicide prevention and mental health. When someone is in acute crisis, it’s hard for them to think clearly, and even reaching out for help can be a struggle. For this reason, it is vital that Congress pass the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act (H.R.4194/ S.2661) to make a three-digit number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline a reality. This legislation would provide the funding and resources needed by crisis centers across the country that support those struggling with their mental health and thoughts of suicide. I am only able to write to you today because I survived a suicide attempt when I was just 14 years old. It truly was a miracle. The universe put me on this earth at this time for a reason. Clearly, it wasn’t done with me yet. I have since dedicated the past nine years of my life to spreading awareness for mental health, specifically regarding suicide prevention, all while earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in social work, and pursuing a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. I hope one day to be a counselor for children and adolescents. I pray I become the person I needed when I was younger, and that I am able to give that gift to any child who is struggling. I was in the darkness so long before, I’m becoming the light. I hope to be there with them until they can find their own way to radiate. In my spare time, I am an advocate for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. I am determined to use my voice for those who no longer can. In this time of uncertainty, we all need to find new ways to connect and support each other. Together, we #KeepGoing. Ciara Nichols, Orland Park
