The Dugout restaurant shuts its doors in Burbank

- By Bob Bong

The Dugout restaurant in Burbank, which reopened a little more than a year ago after a devastating fire, is closed again.

The restaurant at 6300 W. 79th St. has its windows papered over and closed signs are posted on the front door and drive-up window.

The restaurant reopened Oct. 23, 2017, after a fire on June 14 forced its closing.

Longtime owner Mike DiStefano, who opened the doors in 1984, oversaw the rebuilding, which included a new drive-up window and dining room as well as the return of its famed sports memorabilia collection.

When it reopened last year, DiStefano turned its operation over to his cousin, Aaron Diaz, and his sister-in-law, Dawn Schmidt.

DiStefano, who now works as a hockey official, had unsuccessfully tried to sell the restaurant in late 2016.

In September 2016, DiStefano was honored by Vienna Beef, which included The Dugout in its Hot Dog Hall of Fame.

There was no reason given for the closing on its website or Facebook page and phone calls went to a voice mailbox that was not accepting calls.

Stickney Township Supervisor Lou Viverito said the restaurant closed a few weeks ago, but he did not know the reason.

Chipotle coming to South Holland

Chipotle Mexican Grill, a fast-casual eatery that specializes in tacos and Missionstyle burritos, is expected to open in December at 559 E. 162nd St. in South Holland.

The restaurant will anchor a newly constructed 5,500-square-foot commercial building, according to South Holland Director of Economic Development John Watson.

Chipotle will be the second fast-casual chain to open in the village. The first was Panera, which opened in 2013.

The opening will also help another business in the village.

“A good amount of the meat that Chipotle sells is processed/supplied by Miniat Foods, which is located in South Holland’s industrial corridor,” said Watson.
