Former Will County Sheriff Paul Kaupas remained hospitalized Thursday evening following a heart attack, officials said.

Will County sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said the threeterm former sheriff suffered a heart attack Wednesday while at the hospital.

He remained at Silver Cross Hospital in critical but stable condition, she said, but declined further comment.

Kaupas served in Vietnam with the U.S. Marines. He had more than 40 years experience in law enforcement, nearly all of them with the Will County sheriff ’s office.

Kaupas, of New Lenox, retired in 2014 after serving three four-year terms as sheriff.

During his time as sheriff, Kaupas oversaw the expansion of the Will County Jail. During his final campaign for sheriff in 2010, Kaupas pointed to his investment in investigating crimes against senior citizens as one of his accomplishments.

Kaupas was succeeded by Sheriff Mike Kelley, who recently won election to his second term.
