- By Zareen Syed

On Nov. 29, the village of Oak Brook appointed a new village manager through a unanimous vote at a special board meeting. Greg E. Summers, who has served as the assistant village manager of Orland Park since 2019, will be taking over for interim village manager, police Chief James Kruger.

Kruger held a dual role stepping in as manager while resuming his commitment to the Oak Brook Police Department.

“It was a very, very busy six months, certainly over the summer,” Kruger said. “And the duties of police chief are far enough but I was blessed to have great staff both in my command staff at the police department and all the other department heads that pitched in and were able to make it a little less erroneous.”

Summers will officially step into the role on Jan. 3. He could not be reached for comment on Friday.

Summers was also the director of development services for the village of Barrington from 2013 to 2019 and director of engineering and building from 2008 to 2013. He has a Master of Urban Planning degree from the University of Wisconsin and a Bachelor of Arts — architecture degree from Washington University.

“We’ve been very fortunate to have experienced village managers here for many years and we anticipate Mr. Summers will be able to bring his take on delivering government services to our community at the highest level that we expect in Oak Brook,” Kruger added.

According to Oak Brook trustee Suresh Reddy, the selection committee that oversees the appointment of village manger did a “complete and thorough vetting process in selecting Summers and chose him for his experience, knowledge and professionalism.”

Summers’ more than 17 years of work in local government in Illinois makes him uniquely qualified to take on the challenges affecting Oak Brook, Reddy added.
