Crete woman charged with stabbing hotel maid

An Illinois woman is facing attempted murder charges for allegedly stabbing a hotel housekeeper in Schererville.

Jill Ann Simmons, 40, of Crete, Illinois, was also charged March 11 with two counts of battery and one count of resisting law enforcement.

She was arrested last week and ordered held on a $6,000 cash bond.

Police were called around 3:20 p.m. March 9 to the Staybridge Suites, 1758 Fountain Park Drive, where they found two women — the victim and her co-worker- right after the attack.

Simmons was found in the room’s bathroom, documents said.

The two housekeepers told police they didn’t know why Simmons came into the room and attacked them while they were cleaning.

“I need to tell you something,” she said, before pulling out a knife and stabbing one woman.

“Help me,” Simmons said as she went toward her.

The housekeeper grabbed the knife in the struggle, she said.

“Stop doing this,” the victim said she told Simmons, according to the court document.

The woman took the knife and threw it into the janitor cart outside. She realized she was bleeding from the head, she told police.

As she went back inside the room, her co-worker was beating Simmons with a broom handle, charges allege. Simmons went into the bathroom until police came.

They later found she stayed in a room on the floor above, but didn’t have an answer why she went into the room with the housekeepers.

Police found an Illinois paper identification card and some prescription pills for depression, anxiety, weight loss and a thyroid condition in her room, charges state.

A filet knife, bought from a Walmart a half-mile away, was recovered in the cart.

The injured woman needed 24 stitches on her left hand, right ear and head, she said. There were also cuts on her right arm and she was in “miserable pain.”

Simmons fought with officers before she could be handcuffed and was eventually subdued, police said.

A court date has not yet been set.
