AROUND THE HORN

■ Yankees: Gerrit Cole bounced back from the shortest start of his career, Anthony Rizzo powered an early offensive barrage and the Yankees routed the Guardians 10-2 on Sunday in New York to complete a three-game sweep in a series marred by fan misbehavior. Cole (1-0) struck out nine over 6 ⅔ scoreless innings, and Rizzo’s two-run drive in the first inning tied him for the AL lead with five homers. The Yankees won for the fifth time in six games. Guardians outfielders struggled a day after fans threw bottles, cans and other debris at them immediately following the Yankees’ walk-off victory. Myles Straw and Oscar Mercado were heckled after misplays, and breakout rookie Steven Kwan left early with right hamstring tightness. The Yankees said they increased security in the stands Sunday, and fans appeared to refrain from more beverage tossing. DJ LeMahieu had three hits and three RBIs, including a two-run homer in the sixth, and pinch-hitter Tim Locastro pulled a two-run drive in the eighth as the Yankees’ slumping offense had its biggest day of the year. It took the Yankees 16 games this season to score at least seven runs in a game, a first for the franchise since 1990. Cole covered just 1 ⅔ innings in his previous start against the Tigers, tying his career high with five walks. Working with backup catcher Jose Trevino for the first time, Cole limited the Guardians to a walk and four hits. He left to a standing ovation after 92 pitches.

■ Giants: Joc Pederson homered twice, doubled and drove in three runs to help the Giants crush the host Nationals 12-3 for the series sweep. Pederson moved to the leadoff spot after Mike Yastrzemski was placed on the COVID-19 list earlier in the day. He hit a HR to lead off the game, a 441-foot blast that’s the longest leadoff HR by a Giants batter. Pederson did it again leading off the seventh to go 3-for-3. He’s hitting .364 with five HRs and 10 runs scored in his first season with the Giants. Starter Logan Webb (2-1) struggled early, but ended up allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out six over 6 ⅔ innings. He retired eight of the last nine batters he faced.

■ Reds: The Reds ended an 11-game losing streak, their longest in six years, jumping to a first-inning lead and beating the Cardinals 4-1 as former first-round draft pick Nick Lodolo got his first major league win. Colin Moran drove in two runs for the Reds, who had been 0-4 at home this year and hadn’t won anywhere since April 10 against the Braves in Atlanta. The Reds had been outscored 68-20 during the skid. The win left the Reds a major league-worst 3-13. Lodolo (1-2), a 24-year-old left-hander selected seventh overall in the 2019 amateur draft, made his third big league start. Facing an exclusively right-handed lineup, he allowed three hits, struck out seven and walked none in 5 ⅓ shutout innings before Paul Goldschmidt and Tyler O’Neill hit consecutive doubles in the sixth. Lodolo retired Nolan Arenado on a flyout, and Tony Santillan got Albert Pujols to pop out. Lodolo has 15 strikeouts in a combined 10 ⅔ innings over his last two starts.

■ White Sox: OF Eloy Jiménez was placed on the 10-day IL with a right hamstring strain, an injury that is expected to cause him to miss six to eight weeks. Jiménez was injured Saturday trying to beat out a ground ball. An update is expected to be provided Tuesday when the White Sox open a seven-game homestand. A ruptured left pectoral tendon limited the oft-injured Jiménez to 55 games last season. He’s hitting .222 through 11 games this season with one HR and seven RBIs. The White Sox have eight players on the IL: Jiménez, pitchers Ryan Burr (shoulder strain), Garrett Crochet (Tommy John surgery), Joe Kelly (biceps nerve), Lance Lynn (knee tendon tear), Jonathan Stiever (lat surgery), 3B Yoan Moncada (oblique strain) and OF Yermin Mercedes (hand fracture).
