Four inducted into EPCHS Hall; Richards shooters win championsh­ip

Four former Evergreen Park Community High School students were inducted to the school’s Hall of Fame during the Honors Night ceremony held on May 2.

The newest members include Leila C. Younger (1979), Stanley Greanias (1967), Mark Marzullo (1975) and Joseph Ziemba (1967).

Younger is the executive director of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and an assistant professor for the Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California. She provides pro bono dental services to children in impoverish­ed countries and delivers compliment­ary dental services to grade school students at Sunny Hill Grade School in Carpenters­ville.

Greanias had a highly successful business career with stops at Johnson & Johnson, Flavor Tree Foods and Sara Lee, among other companies. He’s also the founder and past president and CEO of the Greek American Restaurant Cooperativ­e.

Marzullo has been an elected Evergreen Park trustee since 1996. The president of the Evergreen Park-based Marzullo Supply, Inc. has made a number of contributi­ons on a local level, including his role in acquiring football field lights at EPCHS and helping establish a girls’ softball league at Yukich Field in Evergreen Park.

Ziemba is considered an expert in the global commercial fire suppressio­n industry and was recognized as the 1999 Volunteer of the Year for the Frankfort Girls’ Softball Associatio­n and in 2018 received the “Thomas Malcolm Volunteer of the Year” award from Morgan Park Academy.

Richards team takes JROTC marksmansh­ip championsh­ip

The U.S. Navy JROTC program from Richards won the District 218 marksmansh­ip championsh­ip the final weekend in April.

Freshman Kylie Schaefer won first place individual­ly.

The Richards team of Bulldog Company defeated the U.S. Air Force JROTC team from Shepard and the U.S. Marine Corps team from Eisenhower.

The competitio­n featured the top three marksmen from all three schools. Competitor­s included Eisenhower’s Matias Cozzi, Shelby Cusack and Vanessa Zendejas; Shepard’s Joe Cinkus, Arianna Esquivel and Karol Kos; and Richards’ Abigail Schrode, Leland Murphy and Schaefer.

Schaefer was dominant winning first in the prone, standing and kneeling positions en route to scoring a season-best 251.9.

Cinkus finished second overall (228.6), Murphy was third (225), Kos took home fourth place (219) and Cozzi was fifth (207.4).

Palos students shine in South Cook Math Bowl

Students at Palos School District 118 not only competed in the 2022 South Cook Math Bowl at Prairie State College on April 28-29, but also had 10 students finish in the top six places.

Its first and second grade team captured first place in Division A, which included Charlie O’Malley winning first place in the first grade individual competitio­n. Kevin Kaufmann took second place in second grade individual while Marshall Pizur earned fourth place.

Nathan Bhojraj won first place while Mohammad Shraim took third in third grade while Rhiannon Chen was fourth in fourth grade. Ellie Kotarba was second in fifth grade while Alira Lika took sixth. In sixth grade, Zachary Jones was fifth. Jack Krusinski earned fifth place in the eighth grade competitio­n.

Richton Park’s Peebles presents at Alma Collage

Tayron Peebles of Richton Park was among the more than 100 Alma College students who participat­ed in Alma College’s 26th annual Kapp Honors Day program on April 7.

Peebles, who is majoring in nursing, gave the presentati­on, “The Effects of Caffeine on Depressive-like Symptoms.”

Miklos recognized for academic excellence

Connor Miklos of Lockport received the Journey Scholarshi­p for the 2021-22 academic year from Central College for a high commitment to academic achievemen­t. He is a member of the class of 2024.
