Egan returns from volleyball to help Mighty Macs go 4-0 to start season

Mother McAuley junior Maeve Egan had a hectic schedule during the days leading up to the start of the girls basketball season.

She was also helping the Mighty Macs win a Class 4A state title in volleyball.

“I would go from a 2 hour volleyball practice to a two-hour basketball practice as many days as I could,” Egan said. “I didn’t have a break, but that was all the fun of it, being a part of that special tradition and winning a championsh­ip.

“I love my volleyball team. I love this team. I love them both so much. I don’t know ... it’s just so much fun, the different sports.” The big difference?

Egan isn’t a starter in volleyball. She’s one of the leading scorers for the basketball team.

The 5-foot-6 guard has been in double figures in three of the first four games this season for the Mighty Macs (4-0).

She was at the top of the chart Saturday with 16 points in a 66-22 victory over Shepard in the championsh­ip game of the Bobby Bolton Classic at Richards.

Egan is in her third varsity season. She’s known as a lightsout shooter from long distance. In Saturday’s game against Shepard, she hit four 3-pointers.

But her game involves a lot more. “I love to shoot the threes,” Egan said. “And when they take away my shot, I love to drive. But for the most part, my defense is what leads into my offense.”

Curtis Lewis, in his first season as McAuley’s coach, won’t be taking away the green light any time soon.

“Maeve brings us a lot,” Lewis said. “She is a heady player who is tough on defense. And she helps with that overall chemistry because she’s unselfish.
