Carson Brownfield started his high school career at Homewood-Flossmoor before transferring to St. Rita. After one year away, he missed H-F badly.

Brownfield, a 6-foot-3 guard, decided to return to where it all began for his junior season.

“It’s been good coming back to my home school,” Brownfield said. “We’ve got a new coach (Jamere Dismukes). I just love it. I love the atmosphere, and I love being back with my friends and family.”

Brownfield made sure Dismukes got a victory in his first game Monday night, scoring 18 points to lead the Vikings to a 63-57 overtime win over Rich Township in the opening of pool play at the Chicago Heights Classic at Marian Catholic.

Senior forward Vincent Davis finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds for H-F (1-0), while sophomore guard Jayden Tyler scored 12 points off the bench. Senior guard Jahlil Birchette added nine points.

Junior guard Samar Bures led Rich Township (0-1) with 19 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Ray Austin scored 11 points and freshman guard Jamson Coulter had nine in the Raptors’ first game under coach Lou Adams, who won three state championships at Orr.

Brownfield thought he could make a big difference this season at H-F. That, and the opportunity to reunite with his friends, pushed him to return.

“I decided to come back because I felt like I could use my skills better here,” Brownfield said. “Plus, I just wanted to come back home.

“I played with some of my teammates when I was younger and then again when I was a freshman. It’s great to be back with these guys. I really love them.”

Brownfield scored seven points in the first quarter before foul trouble slowed him down, but he came back with seven more
