Mariners: Luis Castillo pitched seven shutout innings and the Mariners grabbed sole possession of first place in the AL West, beating the Royals 3-2 on Sunday in Seattle to complete a three-game sweep. Teoscar Hernández and Julio Rodríguez homered as the Mariners won for the 11th time in 12 games. Theys also improved to a major league-best 36-14 since July 1 for its best 50-game stretch since it also went 36-14 from April 23-June 18, 2003. The Mariners (74-56) and Rangers were tied for the division lead coming into the day, but the Rangers lost 7-6 to the Twins in 13 innings. The Mariners trailed the Rangers by 7 games on Aug. 15. It’s the latest the Mariners have had sole possession of first in a season since Aug. 24, 2003. Castillo (11-7) allowed one hit, struck out six and walked one in his fourth consecutiv­e win. The All-Star right-hander retired his last 13 batters. Hernández put the Mariners in front with his third homer in the last two games, hitting a 433-foot solo shot to center off rookie Alec Marsh (0-7) in the second inning. It was his 22nd homer of the season. Rodríguez also went deep for the second straight day, lining a two-run shot to left-center in the fifth to make it 3-0. It was his 23rd of the season.

Astros: Justin Verlander struck out seven over five scoreless innings and Kyle Tucker hit his 26th HR in the third, helping the Astros rout the host Tigers 17-4. Verlander (10-6) gave up just two hits, walked two and hit three batters for career victory No. 254, pulling him into a tie for 43rd

The 40-yearold, three-time Cy Young award winner pitched against one of his former teams in a ballpark where he’s still adored for the second time this season.

Phillies: Aaron Nola allowed one hit and struck out nine in seven sharp innings, Kyle Schwarber homered and the NL wild-card leading Phillies completed a three-game sweep of the visiting Cardinals with a 3-0 victory. Johan Rojas doubled among his three hits and Bryce Harper hit an RBI single for the defending NL champion Phillies, who outscored the Cards 22-3 in the series. After Tommy Edman led off the game with a double, Nola (12-8) retired 21 of the next 22 batters. José Alvarado tossed a scoreless eighth and Craig Kimbrel completed the two-hit shutout with his 20th save in 22 tries with a scoreless ninth. The Cards have lost nine of their last 11.

Rockies: Hunter Goodman had a memorable major league debut in front of an ecstatic group of friends and family at Camden Yards. The 23-yearold Colorado prospect had two hits and RBI, scoring the tiebreakin­g run in the ninth inning of a 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 on Sunday that stopped the Rockies’ six-game losing streak. Batting sixth and playing first base, Goodman was 2 for 4. He flied out in the second, struck out in the fifth, hit an RBI single off Ryan Flaherty in the sixth for a 3-1 lead and reached on an infield single against Yennier Cano (1-3) leading off the ninth with the score 4-all.
