Raiders travel to face Colts in first district game of year

- By DANNY P. SMITH

Oak Hill head football coach Bill Rosenthal hopes this will be the week that his Raiders can put it all together.

After some inconsistencies in the first three games on the field this season, Oak Hill will travel to face the Lee Academy Colts in Clarksdale to open Class 4A, Division 1 play.

It was a tough game on defense for the Raiders against Canton Academy last week in a 62-27 loss.

“We’ve just got to get better on defense,” Rosenthal said. “I thought we were more physical up front, but they just had a lot more speed and we knew that going in. We’ve just got to tackle better.”

Oak Hill quarterback Cameron Dill threw four touchdown passes against Canton Academy, but there were some tough turnovers that prevented more points from being scored at times. The Raiders turned the football over five times.

“We were driving, then they picked one off and went 80 yards for a touchdown to go up 14-7,” Rosenthal said. “We’ve just got to execute better on both sides.”

There will be no better time for Oak Hill to do that than on Friday night at Lee Academy.

The Colts have yet to come out on the winning side this season with losses to Magnolia Heights 13-6, Indianola Academy 44-20, Benton Academy 41-12 and Kirk Academy 28-7.

After having to forfeit the first game of the season to East Rankin Academy due to coronavirus (COVID-19) protocols, the Raiders (1-3) lost to Benton Academy 59-41, defeated Winona Christian 26-23 and lost to Canton Academy.

“I think we are evenly matched, but it’s going to be who executes the best,” Rosenthal said about the matchup with Lee Academy.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
