West Point pitcher Tumey signs with MUW program

JD Tumey has enjoyed learning baseball through the style of West Point head coach Mitch Bohon this season.

When it came time for Tumey to pick a college to continue his career, he found a spot with coaches that were similar in philosophy as Bohon.

Tumey didn't have to look far for that as he signed with Mississippi University for Women and had a ceremony signifying that move on Friday.

“I went over there and met the coaches,” Tumey said about his visit to MUW. “I really liked the school. The coaches are like Bohon. I really like how he coaches and I think that will be able to push me to the next level even after college.

“Coach Bohon has opened my eyes to a whole new style of baseball and a new way of playing. He's done that with all of us. We went from a maybe first or second round team to knowing we can go all the way this year.”

MUW has signed Tumey as a pitcher and Bohon likes his potential moving forward.

“He's got a high ceiling and has made some adjustments this year,” Bohon said. “When it clicks, he's got a chance to be special. Every pitch he throws has movement. He's got arm side run that will come back. It just has to click completely mentally for him.”

The tradition of winning at MUW attracted Tumey to Columbus and he wants to contribute to even more success.

“I believe they have a good shot and with me being able to go to that team, it's even a better shot,” Tumey said. “I think I'm going to have a bright future there. They are there to push everybody that they get. They are going to push us to win.”

There is still some unfinished business for Tumey with the Green Wave (11-9, 3-4) this season as they clinched a Class 5A playoff spot after sweeping Columbus, 15-0 and 22-7, Thursday night.

Tumey and the other West Point seniors will be recognized Saturday prior to the varsity game against Hamilton.
