Public works department to get back to normal garbage pickup

- By CAL BROWN

During the spikes of COVID, the City of West Point's Public Works Department increased trash and garbage collection to a daily routine while following CDC guidelines.

But now that COVID numbers have lowered, the Public Works Department is going to start going back to its normal weekly trash pickup schedule, which would be every Wednesday and Thursday.

For both pickup days, household garbage should be placed in plastic bags, securely tied, and placed at the curb no earlier than 4 p.m. on the day before; for Wednesday's pickup day, that would be placed no earlier than 4 p.m. on Tuesday, and no earlier than 4 p.m. on Wednesday for the Thursday pickup. Garbage pickup will begin at 7:30 p.m. on both days.

Loose garbage will not be picked up. Garbage bags are delivered twice a year. If more garbage bags are needed for your household, extra bags can be purchased at City Hall.

To prevent animals tearing into bags once they're set on the curb, the Public Works Department is suggesting spraying small amounts of ammonia, Lysol, or Clorox on the bags.

Garbage will not be picked up out of or off any type container other than a household type garbage can.

The Public Works Department is also asking you to remove your trash receptacle from the street after your trash has been picked up.

As for rubbish collection, all rubbish needs to be out by 7:30 p.m. on Monday for pickup.

Yard clippings, leaves, and other small rubbish must be bagged and placed at the curb.

Rubbish bags are available at City Hall for a small charge.

Rubbish bags are not to be used for garbage.

Medium size rubbish such as brush and limbs may be placed loose at the curb. Maximum size is six feet in length and four inches in diameter. Do not place rubbish in the street or gutter.

Contractors employed by property owners to cut trees, brush, limbs, etcetera are responsible for debris removal and proper disposal. An additional 25 percent penalty will be added to the normal pickup fees if the City collects these types of cuttings.

Rubbish will not be picked up out of or off any type of container.

Non-vegetative rubbish items may be picked up by the City but on a special schedule for an additional charge by special request.

If items in this category are placed at the curb without prior coordination with the Public Works

Department, they will be considered by the City to have been placed there by the resident who agrees to accept pick-up at an additional charge.

The additional charges will be automatically billed to the resident's Water & Light account.

These items include the following:

Tires

Garbage mixed with rubbish Large furniture items Carpet-floor covering Stumps and commercial tree cuttings

Mattresses and box springs Oversized limbs

Appliances and TVs

Loose leaves

Major landscaping debris

Some rubbish items will not be picked up because of the type of materials that include construction debris, batteries, motor oil, liquids of any kind, chemicals, and paint.

For questions, you can contact the Public Works Department at (662) 494-3513.

If you need to dispose of those types of items somehow, today is the perfect day to do so.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, the Golden Triangle Landfill on 9778 Old West Point Road in Starkville will be having its Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, where you can take your households items that aren't suitable for normal trash pickup to be disposed of.
