75 Years Ago — 1940: This is (ho, hum) New Year’s Day, 1941. The morning (yawn) after the night before for countless numbers of Delaware Countians with thumping skulls and remorseful consciences. Most of you will probably spend the whole day in bed and won’t see this anyhow, but we’ve been assigned to peck out a little article on the spirit of the holiday and what-not. Cafes, night clubs, hotels and just plain bars did some of the best cash business they’ve had in years. Sales stopped promptly at 2 a.m. (oh, yeah?), but the merrymaking continued until well past that hour with the usual noisemakers, confetti and funny little hats very much in evidence. After that it was every man for himself as the celebrators all started up their automobiles and headed for home — theirs or someone else’s — to finish up the night with just one more little nip.
