100 Years Ago — 1915:

Little Miss Sweet Sixteen was given a tremendous welcome by residents of Chester and environs. Resolution­s are now in order. Smoking will be given up by lovers of the weed — for a day or so. Those prone to strong “slang” words will hesitate before making the air blue. Night owls will be seen — wending their way homeward sometime between 10 o’clock and midnight perhaps. Tipplers will be tipless — for the time being. But the fate of resolution­s of former years indicates the town will again be normal in three weeks’ time at the most.

75 Years Ago — 1940:

A Darby man was arrested New Year’s Eve by two members of the State Motor Police and two county detectives when they raided his home in the 900 block of Maple Terrace. A quantity of “number game” slips were confiscate­d, and the man was charged with illegal lottery and held for court.

50 Years Ago — 1965:

Chester Park will now be known as Clarence G. Smedley Park, City Council voted after two new councilmen took the oath of office. Smedley, who was first elected to City Council in 1949, retired as councilman and director of parks and public property. Smedley decided not to run for re-election last year because of ill health. He is 67. The resolution renaming the park, which was read by Mayor James H. Gorbey, said the park was selected to bear Smedey’s name because of its “rose gardens and band shelter, which were constructe­d under his direction.”

25 Years Ago — 1990:

The family of a Chester soldier stationed in Saudi Arabia was targeted by an apparent con artist trying to prey on a worried family a day after the solider had been honored in the Daily

Times. The soldier’s grandmothe­r, whose name was mentioned in the article, was contacted by the man claiming the soldier and five others had been arrested in Saudi Arabia on cocaine possession and that 10 percent of the $53,000 bail should sent by Western Union immediatel­y to the man, who would then post the bail.

10 Years Ago — 2005:

Seeking to raise supplement­al funds to continue providing high-quality education to its students without further burdening taxpayers, Rose Tree Media School District has teamed with AbitibiCon­solidated Recycling Division to participat­e in a community recycling program.
