Bembry leads Saint Joe’s to win at Richmond

RICHMOND, VA. >> DeAndre Bembry scored the final five Saint Joseph’s points and finished with 16 to help the Hawks beat Richmond 77-73 on Saturday in an Atlantic 10 opener.

Bembry missed three free throws with 1:23 left to keep Saint Joseph’s lead at 73-71. Richmond threw it out of bounds on its next possession and then Saint Joseph’s was whistled for a 10-second violation.

ShawnDre’ Jones broke free for an easy layup to tie it at 73, but Bembry answered with a step-back jumper with 26.9 seconds left for a two-point lead.

T.J. Cline missed a hook shot in the lane, and then Bembry secured the rebound and hit two free throws for a four-point lead with 2.5 seconds left.

Saint Joseph’s (11-2), which won its seventh game in a row, was led by Isaiah Miles’ 17 points and career-high 16 rebounds.

Jones had 22 points for Richmond (8-5) and Terry Allen added 21 with eight rebounds. HOUSTON77,TEMPLE50 >> Rob Gray Jr. had 23 points, Ronnie Johnson added 17, and Houston beat Temple for the Cougars’ fourth straight victory.

Houston scored the first six points of the game and held Temple to without a field goal for seven-plus minutes during a 17-1 run for a 37-17 lead. Johnson scored 11 points during the spurt, including a 3-pointer to cap it.

Johnson had 14 points in the first half for Houston (12-2, 2-0 American Athletic). Devonta Pollard finished with 12 points and LeRon Barnes had eight points and 13 rebounds to help the Cougars hold a 41-30 advantage on the glass.

Gray took over in the second half with a 14-point showing, including two 3-pointers in the first five minutes.

Obi Enechionyi­a and Quenton DeCosey led Temple (6-6, 1-1) with nine points apiece. The Owls were just 3 of 23 from 3-point range (13 percent). PENN80,BINGHAMTON­45>> Matt Howard scored 23 points with a careerhigh five 3-pointers and Penn routed Binghamton.

Jackson Donahue scored 17 points with four 3-pointers for his third straight double-figure scoring game and fourth this season. Antonio Woods had six assists and Penn never trailed.

The Quakers (6-7), who start the Ivy League season Jan. 9 against Princeton, made 12 of 32 3-pointers and outshot the Bearcats 48 percent to 24 percent.

Binghamton was scoreless for the final 7:33 of the first half while Penn scored 16, including 3s by Howard and Donahue, and led 37-14 at halftime.

The teams traded baskets in the second half until Howard hit an- other 3 amid a 14-0 run to lead 73-37 with 2:33 left. Penn began clearing its bench, with Collin McManus, Dylan Jones and Darnell Foreman seeing their first action of the season.

Elon (10-5, 1-1 Colonial) led by as many as 18 points early in the second half but Drexel chipped away, pulling to within four on Tavon Allen’s 3-pointer to make it 80-76 with 28 seconds to play. Samson then clinched the win with 3-of-4 shooting from the line.

Santa Ana pumped in four 3-pointers for the Phoenix, which shot 49 percent from the field to even the alltime series with Drexel at 2-2. Tyler Seibring had 15 points and Dmitri Thompson 11.

Allen and Rodney Williams scored 19 points apiece for the Dragons (211, 0-2), while Sammy Mojica added 14.

Drexel controlled the boards 4437 but had only eight assists and hit just 25 of 67 (37.3 percent) from the floor.
