What would it be like to die?

- Anthony Formelio, Glenolden

To the Times: What is it like to die? Would you feel like it’s your last breath? If you fall asleep would feel like you’re closing your eyes for the last time?

Would you have changed anything in your lifetime one way or another? Would you feel bad or sad that you’re leaving your spouse all alone?

There must be a feeling of emptiness in his or her heart. All through married life you held hands and said “how much I love you,” and were able to say “goodnight, sweetheart, see you in the morning.” You know each Dec. 31 we gather with family, watch TV and count the seconds to bring in the new year. And the first one you kiss is the love of your life, the most precious in this whole wide world. But when your spouse is gone, do you realize how empty your life would be? Like a stab in the heart? You might even want to blame God. But fate and what you believe in goes a long way with that.

We all know you can’t live forever, but at the moment you feel so bad that you’re bringing in the New Year all alone. Thank God we turn to family for support. When we get older, it’s a lonely road to carry on. What would you feel? Would you have any feelings at all? When you’re in your grave, would you feel like you’re in a stage of darkness, reaching out for something to grab onto, like a feeling of drowning, or falling from a cliff? Perhaps feel like you’re just drifting in space. What does it feel like? Would you let everything go, and say “goodbye, world?” I have no regrets. Would I really rest in peace? What is it really like to die?
