Show support for law enforcement on Jan. 9

To the Times: Each day, 780,000 police officers across our country put on a badge and go to work knowing they may face dangerous situations.

“A policeman is a composite of what all men are, mingling of a saint and sinner, dust and deity,” recites broadcaster Paul Harvey in his narration titled, “Policeman.” This narration embodies the spirit of the job that police perform.

On Jan. 9, the Fraternal Order of Police calls our nation’s citizens to action in support of law enforcement. National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day grew out of negativity directed toward law enforcement. There is a need to show law enforcement that people recognize the difficult career they have chosen. Police officers sometimes only have seconds with few known facts to make life-anddeath decisions that others have hours, days and months to review.

“If he hurries, he’s careless; if he’s deliberate, he’s lazy. He must be first to an accident and infallible with his diagnosis,” explains Harvey.

Individuals can show support by changing your profile picture on social media or by sending a card of support to your local police department.

On average, between 105 and 203 officers die, 50,000 officers are assaulted, and 14,000 officers are injured in the line of duty each year. These truly sobering statistics demand recognition nationwide. It is imperative that we take the time to give these public servants the recognition, support and appreciation they so deserve.
