100 Years Ago – 1916: Carried from his burning home in an unconsciou­s condition, Robert E. Hannum, a Civil War veteran and well known aged resident of the First Ward, is in a serious condition in the Chester Hospital. A report said that his condition was favorable and that he would probably recover. He was taken to the hospital in the apparatus of the Good Will Fire Co.

75 Years Ago – 1941:

Clear, sub-freezing weather prevailed in the Chester area again and brought added hopes that the long siege of grippe and influenza has been finally put to rout. Most physicians were of the opinion that

the several days of freezing temperatur­es would result in a sharp decline in the number of “flu” cases, which had attained almost epidemic proportion­s during the last few weeks and which had in some cases caused entire families to be confined to bed at the same time.

50 Years Ago – 1966:

Republican U.S. Rep. G. Robert Watkins is expected to win his party’s backing for a new term in Washington, but probably not for two months. The surprise endorsemen­t of Lt. Gov. Raymond P. Shafer as the GOP candidate for governor this year by the Republican Board of Supervisor­s (War Board) immediatel­y

set off speculatio­n about how soon that candidate-picking body would name the local ticket and whom they would pick.

25 Years Ago – 1991: The Marple Newtown Amateur Radio Club has received a gift of video equipment from Suburban Cable TV Co. that will allow the group to participat­e in amateur television, according to MNARClub President Walter Faust. Prompted by a modernizat­ion program, Suburban Cable TV donated six video cameras, camera power packs, tape decks, a sound controller and other electronic items.

10 Years Ago – 2006: Upper Darby Police Superinten­dent Michael Chitwood commended two veteran officers on their retirement in December: Criminal Investigat­or Edward Hunger and Patrolman James Sands. Sands, who worked as a patrol officer his entire career, was a hostage negotiator and assisted Darby Township with an incident on Calcon Hook Road in 1984. Hunger, who started as a civilian police dispatcher, worked as a highway patrolman before his appointmen­t to the detective division as a criminal investigat­or. He was commended for bravery and heroism for rescuing fire victims in 1985, 2000 and 2002.
