Philly cop charged with assault in Delco
UPPER DARBY >> A Philadelphia cop with an alleged previous arrest record for assault was arrested in Drexel Hill for simple assault involving township police and jailed.
Deric Lewis, 35, of the 600 block of Drexel Avenue, Drexel Hill, was taken into custody 12:30 a.m. Dec. 29 at his residence.
“We initially responded to a call for a domestic dispute with a weapon,” Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said of the 911 call placed at 11:49 p.m. Dec. 28. “The woman stated to the 911 operator, ‘Please hurry — he has a gun and he’s going to kill me.’
“Officers arrived and separated the couple. He refused to give his identification and told police to get out. No gun was found.”
According to the affidavit, Lewis allegedly continued to refuse to cooperate and became loud and boisterous, using obscene language “yelling and screaming.”
“One of the officers put his hand on (Lewis’) chest to create separation and Lewis slapped his hand away,” Chitwood said.
Lewis was arrested and allegedly continued his un- cooperative behavior at the police station but was identified through prior police contacts.
According to Chitwood, Lewis is a Philadelphia police officer assigned to the 19th District.
“He apparently was fired for a domestic violation and got his job back,” Chitwood said.
According to Chitwood, Lewis was arrested twice in 2010 in Philadelphia for assault charges but both cases were withdrawn.
Lewis was arraigned in Upper Darby for the Dec. 29 incident on charges of simple assault and harassment.
He posted 20 percent of $20,000 bail pending a preliminary hearing Jan. 12 before Magisterial District Judge Kelly Micozzie-Aguirre.
