100Years Ago – 1916: “A Scout is Helpful,” one of the 12points of the Law of the Boy Scouts, is being exemplifie­d during this season by the different troops in Chester. There are many gifts and baskets for delivery among the poor and the Boy Scouts are busily engaged carrying these packages for the different organizati­ons. The boys also assisted Chief of Police Vance this week in trimming the community Christmas tree in Deshong Park.

75 Years Ago – 1941: “The Chester Reporter in this issue has added comics, a cross-word puzzle and other features to bring you a fuller, more enjoyable newspaper. From our humble beginning as a tabloid more than a month ago, we have grown considerab­ly. We will continue to grow. More features will be added to the paper as we grow older and stronger. The paper will continue to present all the local news and informatio­n vital to the defense of Chester and vicinity as long as necessary.”

50Years Ago – 1966: This was Christmas Eve in snowbound Delaware County. Men, women and children sleeping in motel and hospital lobbies. Empty jail cells in Marple and Media being turned into accommodat­ions for trapped motorists. Residents opening their homes to people caught

in the holiday storm. The Media Inn Motor Lodge was completely sold out, with about 35storm victims sleeping in the lobby. Christmas dinner cancellati­ons in the hotel’s resultant also were numerous, but some 250meals were served.

25Years Ago – 1991: Who would spend weekends in the 19th century? Members of Past Masters in Early American Domestic Arts learn and demonstrat­e household skills of colonial Pennsylvan­ia. One of these demonstrat­ions is coming Dec. 29at the Cheshire House, 1200Main Street in Upland. Past Masters will present “Seasonal Festivitie­s in 18th Century

Pennsylvan­ia,” including sampling some holiday fare prepared from English recipes of the period.

10Years Ago – 2006: Hundreds of shoppers filled the Springfiel­d Mall Sunday evening and many of them were doing last-minute Christmas shopping. “I’m shopping for my daughter’s boyfriend’s family, my husband, and my younger daughter’s family. I bought things at Hickory Farms and Macy’s,” said Leah Maley, 50, of Ridley Park. “The customer service at the stores was great. I was hoping to catch last-minute sales and I did.”
