100 Years Ago – 1917:
The fourth annual banquet of the Chester Club was held at the home of the organization, 511 Welsh St. About 60 members representing every branch of business and professional activity were represented. Following the dinner the guests were treated with speeches giving recitals of military and exploring adventures in North and South American countries.
75 Years Ago – 1942:
The Japanese government has granted the World’s Committee of the Young Men’s Christian Association permission to conduct general welfare activities among the American, British and Dutch prisoners of war in the Far East. YMCA workers probably will be selected form the neutral Swiss or Swedish nationals now resident in Japan, according to Mr. Nelson.
50 Years Ago – 1967:
Stanley E. Branche, Greater Chester Movement Opportunity Center director, resigned from his $11,000-a-year job with the antipoverty organization. The resignation, which is effective immediately, followed lengthy discussion by the GCM Executive Committee on federal regulations which prohibit candidates for public office from serving as paid employees in antipoverty programs. Branche was endorsed by the City Democratic Screening Committee last month as candidate for mayor. He will run against Adam Polak, a critic of the city’s Democratic organization, in the May Democratic primary.
25 Years Ago – 1992:
Millbourne Borough officials, who met with the Homeless Day Center site search committee, shared their concerned with council members at a recent meeting. Under consideration is the one-story 10,000 square foot building at 6707-10 Garden Court, the former Social Security office, to facilitate a day center for the rehabilitation of 70 homeless persons.
10 Years Ago – 2007:
Four Delaware County school districts have vowed to limit his year’s property tax hike to between 3.4 percent and 5.4 percent, but several others are asking the Pennsylvania Department of Education to approve larger increases that exceed a new stateimposed inflationary index. Upper Darby, Chester Upland, Garnet Valley and Interboro school districts are among the 192 districts statewide that adopted a resolution indicating they would not increase taxes above their local index.
