BSA Troop 272 adds 4 to Eagle Scout ranks
ROSE VALLEY >> Rose Valley Troop 272 of the Boy Scouts of America welcomed family, friends, local politicians and scouts to a recently ceremony at the Old Mill to honor the troop’s newest Eagle Scouts, Ben Troutman of Swarthmore, and William Hsin, Andrew Mackey and Kevin Yin of Wallingford. Eagle Scout is the highest honor in Scouting. To receive the rank, scouts must complete significant milestones which culminate in an Eagle Scout project that brings together all of the Boy Scout teachings to organize and lead a project for the community. The four scouts’ projects were: • Ben Troutman created a fire pit and patio for Gateway Community Church to use for its events. He planted new flowers in front of both of the church’s signs to make them more attractive.
• William Hsin continued the troop’s commitment to the Preservation and Beautification Project of the Hedgerow Theatre House, providing privacy from the main road, cell tower and nearby neighbors. The project included planting many black walnut-resistant plants to tolerate the toxic conditions and create a “green screen” around the property. Mulch was placed to complete a memorial garden and walkway.
• Andrew Mackey planned and built a raised bed garden at the Chester Senior Center. The garden consisted of four, 4x8-feet beds, with a total of 121 plants donated by Miller’s Greenhouse. The garden provides activity for the seniors in the gardening club.
• Kevin Yin improved the entrance area of the Old Mill, where Troop 272 meets weekly. He re-introducing native plant species to the area, prevented soil erosion by stabilizing the nearby stream bank with stones, established an emergency water-supplying method for the area’s fountain and rebuilt the destroyed Old Mill sign.
Established in 1953, Boy Scout Troop 272 of Rose Valley is one of the largest troops in Delaware County and is nationally recognized for its youth leadership development. This reputation is best illustrated by its list of over 100 Eagle Scouts. For information, visit www.troop272bsa.org
