Over failed GOP health bill
health services, and care to pregnant women and children were all on the chopping block, as were subsidies for folks to afford care. Big businesses like the Trump Organization would have been off the hook for offering health insurance to their employees, causing 7 million Americans with employer-based health insurance to lose their coverage.
TrumpCare’s deep cuts to Medicaid would have been an assault on individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, since they are people who commonly rely on Medicaid for their coverage. Over 3 million children would have lost care, premiums and deductibles would have skyrocketed for most groups, in particular seniors, and thousands of preventable American deaths would have occurred each year.
Although President Trump claims that he is “moving on” from health care, we still must be vigilant in protecting the ACA. Republicans remain in control of both legislative branches of our government and the White House. There is no reason to believe that they have rejected their belief that health care is a privilege and that if you don’t have health insurance it’s your own fault. Hopefully in the future, the crafting of health policy will once again go back to nurses, doctors, researchers and other experts who understand our health-care system.
While the ACA has already covered more than 20 million Americans and has made health care better, more accessible, and less expensive, we still have room to improve. While Republicans, Democrats, and Independents may differ on how we can accomplish making care even more affordable and attainable, we must continue to fight and resist any attempt to weaken the secure healthcare system that we already have.
