100 Years Ago – 1917:
The Times has had printed a limited supply of the national airs, “The Star Spangled Banner” and “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,” for free distribution. At no time in the history of the country were these two songs so popular and appropriate as right at the present moment. Strange as it may seem, there are many who do not know the words of both songs and who do not have copies of them in their homes.
75 Years Ago – 1942:
The final stage of the Chester Reporter’s “Records for the Rookies” for the USO begins today and the goal of 5,000 discs may be reached by the end of the week. If you have volunteered records and have not been called upon as yet, please bear with us. The persons assigned to work of collecting and sorting the more than 3,000 records already contributed have been unable to keep up with the platters.
50 Years Ago – 1967:
More bargains than the most avid bargain hunter could bargain for in a month will confront area shoppers this weekend. Friday and Saturday have been designated “Chester Downtown Days” by the Chester Business Men’s Association. Twenty-nine city stores will participate in the annual two-day value extravaganza, including Charming Shoppe, Chester Penn 5 & 10, Carl A. Doubet, Hollywood Shop, L&H Wonder Store, Penn-Jersey Auto Stores, Pep Boys; Rosenblatt’s Music Store, Sears, Roebuck & Co., Slater’s, Speare Brothers, Stanley Furniture, Tollins, Weinberg’s and Woolworth’ s.
25 Years Ago – 1992:
A rare oak tree was planted at the foot of the Capitol in memory of U.S. Sen. John Heinz, R-Pa., who was killed a year ago yesterday when his chartered plane collided with a helicopter over a schoolyard in suburban Philadelphia. Family and friends planted the chinquapin oak. Sen. Albert Gore, D-Tenn., said the type of tree planted for Heinz said had disappeared from the Capitol area and that he hoped it would be the first of many to return.
10 Years Ago – 2007:
A former county probation officer was charged with drunken driving one month after completing a special probationary program he was afforded after he was charged with DUI and leaving his 3-year-old son home alone. The 39-yearold Springfield man is facing DUI and related charges in connection with a reckless driving incident at in a restaurant parking lot in the shopping center at routes 1 and 420.
