Klein, O’Hara tip-toe past Bonner-Prendie in Catholic win

Liam Nihill was outstandin­g on the mound for Cardinal O’Hara Wednesday.

Making his first Catholic League start on the varsity level, Nihill allowed only two hits while striking out four batters in six-plus innings to lead the Lions past Bonner & Prendergas­t, 2-0.

Nihill ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh when the Friars got their first two hitters to reach base. Isaiah Hammond entered in relief of Nihill, struck out two and recorded the save.

The Lions (2-4, 1-1) scored the game’s only runs in the bottom of the first. Eric Stewart smacked an RBI single and O’Hara scored its second run on the same play following a Bonner error.

Brian Bromley singled, walked and scored a run for O’Hara.

Evan Raiburn pitched very well in defeat. The Friars senior fanned five and gave up only four hits in a complete game performanc­e.

Elsewhere in the Catholic League: ARCHBISHOP CARROLL 2, LA SALLE 1 » Tyler Kehoe scored the game-winning run following a single by Max Hitman to lead off the top of the eighth. James Kelly fanned nine over seven strong innings of four-hit ball and Jack Houser registered the save.

In the Central League: GARNET VALLEY 3, LOWER MERION 1 » John McLaughlin ignited the Jaguars’ rally in the ninth inning with a single. GV scored what proved to be the winning run on an error and Liam Bendo doubled home Cole Palis for an insurance.

SPRINGFIEL­D 5, HARRITON 0 » Mike Smith was an out away from a completega­me shutout and helped himself at the plate two singles and a pair of RBIs. Andrew Paulus and Smith each drove in two runs for Springfiel­d. PENNCREST 4, RADNOR 1 » The Lions racked up only four hits on the afternoon, but the story of the game centered around the strong pitching of Dylan Bittle and Justin Prorock, who combined on a threehitte­r. Sam Freedman accounted for two of those knocks, including a triple, and drove in a pair of runs.

George Hoysgaard was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. HAVERFORD 7, RIDLEY 2 » The Fords put up crooked numbers in the first, second and third innings en route to romping the visiting Green Raiders.

Drew Fowler fueled the Fords with three hits, including a double, and one RBI. Luke Marmer added two singles, two runs scored and an RBI, while Dyland Resnick went 1 for 2 with a walk, run and two RBIs.

James Becker led Ridley with two hits and Nick Pellegrino banged out a double. MARPLE NEWTOWN 8, STRATH HAVEN 1 » Scott Hahn twirled five solid innings for the win and Luke Zimmerman legged out a triple for the Tigers (2-2, 2-2). CONESTOGA 5, UPPER DARBY 2 » Mike Peters had a good day at the dish, going 3 for 3 with a walk and a run scored for the Royals. Both squads were plagued by shoddy defense (four errors apiece).

Nolan Ward, who started for UD, struck out eight and allowed two runs over four innings. DELCO CHRISTIAN 12, PHILMONT CHRISTIAN 1 » Freshman Brett Tanis got his first varsity win by pitching two innings of relief. Penn Schmidt hurled three no-hit frames with five strikeouts. Delco scored six runs in the first and tacked on four in the second.

In the Del Val League: CHICHESTER 4, ACADEMY PARK 1 » Hunter Killinen was masterful on the mound for the Eagles (41, 3-1). Killinen pitched a complete game three-hitter with nine punchouts.

Joe Renzi had a twoRBI hit and Nick Jones also drove in a run for Chi.

In nonleague play: EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 10, LAWRENCEVI­LLE SCHOOL 6 » Brian and Kyle Virbitsky each had two hits and two RBIs to help the Churchmen, who overcame five errors. Kyle Virbitsky, Dylan Everly and Jack O’Reilly all crossed the plate twice.
