100 Years Ago – 1917: A triple flag-raising was held in the Chester Shipbuildi­ng Co. that provoked wild outbursts of enthusiasm, and served to place the large industry in the forefront of plants of this section which have in various ways shown their intense patriotism. The department­s holding the flag-risings were the hull, rigging and carpenter decisions. The event had been scheduled for Friday, but in respect to the Eddystone explosion victims it was postponed until yesterday.

75 Years Ago – 1942: Housewives were urged by the Junior Chamber of Commerce to cooperate in Chester’s “Build a Tank” campaign on Sunday. In preparatio­n for the drive, housewives were asked to bring out of hiding: Old metal ornaments, obsolete plumbing and heating equipment, broken tools – to make guns, planes and tanks; old tire and tubes, hot water bottles and bath mats – go into reclaimed rubber; old rags – to be made into wiping rages for war machinery; wastepaper – for conversion into cartons to ship munitions and food.

50 Years Ago – 1967: Pennsylvan­ia State University has announced it will temporaril­y locate its new Delaware County extension campus in Chester until permanent facilities can

be completed within three years. Penn State officials said the university will begin operating temporary facilities July 1 at the Coopersmit­h Building, Sixth and Penn streets.

25 Years Ago – 1992: Five residents voiced their support for officials taking a stand against a plan for a homeless shelter in Upper Darby. The taxpayers defended the behavior of the council members during the Community Action Agency meeting on March 24 and disagreed with the numerous letter to the edtior suggesting council members should apologize. “We are compassion­ate people. The homeless are the ones that got up and

walked out,” said a Hampshire Road resident. “The homeless were screaming and hollering and using profanitie­s,” said Councilman Rudy D’Alesio.

10 Years Ago – 2007: A Yeadon teen allegedly tied by DNA found on a lip balm container at an apartment burglary in which shots were fired at a tenant is behind bars at the county prison, charged as an adult with attempted homicide and related offenses. The 17-year-old was in custody at Berks County Juvenile Detention Center on unrelated firearm offenses in Reading when he was arrested.
