Media’s Divis honored for humanitarian work
Media native Danny Divis and Justin McKenzie, senior ice hockey players at St. Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt., received the Hockey Humanitarian Award during the NCAA Championships in Chicago last weekend.
The award is presented “to college hockey’s finest citizen — a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team, but also to the community-at-large through leadership in volunteerism.”
Divis and McKenzie became the first co-recipients of the award. They are founders of the campus organization Hope Happens Here (HHH), which promotes mental health awareness and wellness among college students, in particular student-athletes.
As juniors, Divis and McKenzie co-founded HHH, hoping to create a movement that would help in “removing the stigma of mental health issues on college campuses.” They made presentations at local high schools and at the University of Vermont and held mental health awareness events at various St. Michael’s sports home games.
This year as part of Mental Health Awareness fund-raisers at men’s and women’s ice hockey games, they collected $4,000 for the To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) charity, to which they plan to donate their Hockey Humanitarian honorariums.
Divis, a team captain at St. Michael’s, played for two years at The Gunnery, a prep school in Connecticut, helping his team to NEPSHA West league championships in 2010 and 2011. During the 201112 season, he split time between in the Eastern Junior Hockey League with the Springfield Jr. Pics and Philadelphia Revolution and played for Philadelphia and the Minnesota Wilderness of the Superior International Junior Hockey League in 2012-13.
This year, he was the highest scoring defenseman in NCAA Division IIIII hockey and was named to the All-New England Conference team for the second consecutive season. Last year, he was winner of the Capital One Division II Academic All-District award, and he recently earned his second NE-10 Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Award.
