Springfield to celebrate 25th Loyalty Day April 29
SPRINGFIELD >> A coalition of organizations and individuals will present the 25th annual Loyalty Day program 10 a.m., April 29 at the township building, 50 Powell Rd. The first day of May has been designated Loyalty Day across America by an Act of Congress.
A proclamation approved by the Board of Commissioners read, “Loyalty Day is a time to reflect on those who not only put their lives on the line on foreign soil, but also those unsung heroes in our own community, Springfield’s very special police department, fire department and ambulance corps who protect us on a daily basis.”
One member of each township organization has been chosen to be honored this year. That selection by his/her peers is particularly prized by the individuals.
In the prior two-and-a-half decades, former Representative Bill Adolph has championed this event in collaboration with veterans groups. With Adolph now retired from that public service position and veterans groups reconfigured, township commissioners are carrying on this valued tradition. It is expected that all who have participated in the past will eagerly do so at present.
Loyalty Day was recognized by the U.S. Congress on April 27, 1955, and made an official reoccurring holiday on July 18, 1958. Its purpose from the outset was as a special day for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States and for the recognition of the heritage of American freedom. In part, it was also a response to International Workers’ Day established with socialist and communist underpinnings.
“Loyalty Day is an ideal opportunity to publicly recognize emergency first responders and to remember those Americans who serve, and have served, in the armed forces,” said commissioners. They encouraged the public to take a short time from their Saturday morning to support and recognize township first responders—many of whom are volunteers—for their service to the community.
