Gutowiecz, Lewis get Sun Valley moving

The final score was the same, only the outcome was different this time around.

Sun Valley scored 10 runs in the first inning and rode that outburst to an 11-7 Ches-Mont League softball victory over Downingtow­n West Wednesday. The Vanguards (6-4) fell to Avon Grove by the same score Wednesday.

Sun Valley had nine of their 14 hits in that first-inning outburst. Winning pitcher Madison Gutowiecz led the way with three hits, including a pair of doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored. Mackenzie Lewis collected three hits, three runs scored and one RBI. Carlie Williams also had three hits to go with one RBI and one run scored, while Bridget Thomas had two hits one RBI and one run scored.

In the Central League: GARNET VALLEY 3, RADNOR 1 >> The Jaguars only had three hits, but two were by winning pitcher Becca Halford, who also fanned five and allowed just five safeties. Diane Torregross­a had a double for GV (5-4, 4-4). UPPER DARBY 14, STRATH HAVEN 2 >> Samantha Witmer and Jessica Liberio combined to drive in four runs for the Royals. Witmer plated four runs, while Liberio went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Winning pitcher Sara Sullivan scattered three hits in five innings. RIDLEY 4, SPRINGFIEL­D 2 >> Leigh Ann Jenkins tossed a five-hitter with six strikeouts. She also contribute­d a triple. The Green Raiders scored three times in the bottom of the third inning to break a scoreless deadlock.

Jenna Casasanto stroke three hits and allowed four hits in a losing effort for the Cougars. PENNCREST 13, LOWER MERION 0 >> Only an error prevented Maya Hartman from throwing a perfect game. She fanned nine in five innings to keep the Lions (9-0, 7-0) undefeated.

Sammy Martin paced the offense with two hits and three RBIs. Emma Stauffer (2-for-4) knocked in two runs and Olivia Rigby (4-for-4, three runs scored) and Megan Clancy (3-for-4, two runs scored) drove in one run each. CONESTOGA 6, MARPLE NEWTOWN 2 >> Shortstop Olivia Cepielik made a diving stop with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning to end it for the Pioneers.

Rachel Cowley ripped a pinch-hit RBI single to cut the defict to 6-2. After a walk, Paige Benasutti ripped a ball down that appeared to be headed for extra bases before Cepielik made her diving catch to end the contest. Michelle Tannahill had two hits for the Tigers.

In the Catholic League: ARCHBISHOP WOOD 2, BONNER & PRENDERGAS­T 0 >> Molly McNulty fanned six and allowed just two hits and one earned run in a losing effort for the Pandas. Caroline Manfre had a double for Bonner & Prendie (6-3, 4-2). ST. HUBERT 3, CARDINAL O’HARA 2 >> The Lions rallied in the top of the seventh with two runs, but fell short. Maura Kane knocked in two runs with a single and Grace Hussey went 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base.

In the Del Val League: INTERBORO 10, PENN WOOD 0 >> Riley Morrison allowed one hit and fanned three in four innings to keep the Bucs (8-1, 5-0) undefeated in the league. Amber Seamen paced the offense with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Emily Gavin and Haley Barrett added one RBI each.

In the Bicentenni­al League: NEW HOPE-SOLEBURY 8, CHRISTIAN ACADEMY6>> Grace Gormley led the Crusaders with two hits and three runs scored. Carly Ryle added one hit and three RBIs. FAITH CHRISTIAN 10, DELCO CHRISTIAN 2 >> Outfielder Ellie Eppright had nine putouts for the Knights.

In nonleague action: AGNES IRWIN 11, SACRED HEART 1 >> Michala Maciolek and Mary Naylor drove in three runs each for the Owls. Winning pitcher Paige DiLullo and Audrey McGrory plated two runs apiece.

Boys Track

Two individual wins from Rami Marsh, Semaj Robinson and Ameer Webster carried Glen Mills to a double dual meet victory over Penn Wood and Interboro. The Bulls knocked off the Patriots, 80-69, and defeated the Bucs, 112-38. Penn Wood beat Interboro 116-30.

Marsh won the 300 intermedia­te (40.9) and the 110 high hurdles (151). Robinson took first in the discus (139-0) and shot put (53-1½), while Ameer Webster was first in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Dennis Manyeah won the 400 and the high jump to pace Penn Wood, which also won the 4 x 800 and 4 x 400-meter relays. Dylan Longale finished first in the pole vault for Interboro.

best regular season in coach Patty Fitzgerald’s 14 years in charge. The Lions defeated Bonner-Prendergas­t, 5-0 to close the year 6-2 in the Philadelph­ia Catholic League, good for the No. 3 seed in next week’s playoffs. O’Hara dropped just one set, and it came in the first singles match. Andrew Shuda dropped a 1-6 decision to the Friars’ Jan Staiber before rattling off wins of 6-3 and 6-0. The rest of Shuda’s teammates followed suit.

In the Central League RADNOR 7, PENNCREST 0 >> After the Raiders cruised through the singles matches, the Lions gave Radnor some trouble in doubles, particular­ly in the fourth pairing. Alex Samaha and A.J. Bloomfield were tested by Julian Ingrim and Colby Schnyder. The Raiders duo emerged with a 6-3, 6-3 victory to help Radnor improve to 9-2 on the season. STRATH HAVEN 7, HAVERFORD 0 >> Clay Gaieski set the tone for a dominant afternoon from the Panthers with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Alex Arcidiacon­o in first singles play. However, the young Fords gave Haven trouble in doubles. A spirited comeback from Michael Hughes and Jack McGovern put a scare into Jacob Knauer and Ben Troutmen before the Panthers came out with a 6-2, 6-4 win. Haverford falls to 3-6 and 2-5 in the Central.

In the Ches-Mont: KENNETT 7, SUN VALLEY 0 >> Gabe Boccella and Ishy Ahmad each won a set in singles play, while Adam Figorski and Chris Britten knicked one of their opponents, Cole Wikins and Spence Kent in doubles. But those were the lone highlights in a tough outing for the Vanguards.
