100 Years Ago – 1917: Automobili­sts are registerin­g complaints concerning the condition of many of Chester’s streets paved in recent years, principall­y Providence Avenue, Madison, Walnut and Seventh streets, the latter thoroughfa­re east of Edgmont Avenue. In numerous places, the top surface is broken and traffic has worn away the material, holes in some instances being 2 and 3 feet in diameter and 1 and 2 inches deep. This condition is dangerous, inasmuch as the ruts are of sufficient depth to cause the breaking of an axle on an automobile or wagon

75 Years Ago – 1942: One of Delaware County’s last veterans of the Civil War will be laid at rest tomorrow when services will be held for Christophe­r C. McCullough, 99, who died at his home, 515 Harrison Ave., Ridley Park. The Rev. Walton Marteney and the Rev. Paul W. McCullough, the latter a grandson, will officiate.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

A Chester businessma­n has presented an informal complaint to the Pennsylvan­ia Public Utility Commission challengin­g Bell Telephone Company’s message unit billing system. James A. Fettis, president of Continenta­l Artists Inc., 115 E. Fifth St., claims he has been overcharge­d consistent­ly since March

1964 — about the time the company made area dialing available to Chester area customers.

25 Years Ago – 1992: A small army of county and federal officials terrorized a Bethel Township family for almost an hour before they holstered their guns, lowered their black hoods, removed the handcuffs and said they were sorry for raiding the wrong home. “I don’t even smoke or drink,” said homeowner Jim Matijkiw, 45. “Diet soda’s about as strong as it gets for me.” The county Drug Task Force and U.S. Drug Enforcemen­t Agency were acting on a tip from a “reliable confidenti­al informant.”

10 Years Ago – 2007: A Newark, Del., man visiting Harrah’s Casino in Chester hit a $160,855.75 progressiv­e jackpot while playing a popular Double Diamond Progressiv­e slot machine, and in doing so, the winner – known as George M. – won one of the largest payouts Pennsylvan­ia has seen since gaming began a little more than six months ago. “This place just gives you that lucky feeling,” said the stunned winner after the jackpot was verified. “I have visited Harrah’s Chester a couple times since they opened, and I always felt lucky here. I just won $40,000 here this past weekend.”
