100 Years Ago – 1917:

Grasping an iron chain on a telegraph pole at the Plaza, Model City, Marcus Hook, last evening, a native of Bridgevill­e, Del., met instant death. Approximat­ely 17,000 volts passed through the youth’s body. He inadverten­tly leaned against the telegraph pole and grasped the chain which was charged, supposedly due to the electrical storm of yesterday morning.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Martin O’Neil is a farsighted ‘gent. For six months he has carried a bus ticket to Baltimore around with him and Saturday it came in handy. It may not get him to Baltimore but it kept him out of jail. Arrested at Seventh and Sproul streets for “panhandlin­g” and arraigned fore Magistrate Lowry, he said that he spent all his money for the ticket and was only trying to get a little “eatin’ money.” When presented the ticket to back up his claim, Lowery noticed a Jan. 1 date. However, he yielded to O’Neill’s plea for a “break” and release him, giving him a half hour to get out of the city.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Her son wanted “to be aware, instead of having to wait,” said Mrs. Joseph Greenberg, 247 E. Parkway Ave., Chester. So Leslie Greenberg, 22, flew to Israel last week to help harvest the crops while the nation fights the Arabs. Greenberg was one of about 20 young people from the eastern United States who flew to the Middle East last Thursday as part of the “Airlift for Peace.”

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Haverford police arrested a 22-year-old township man and his 52-year-old father following car stop after the pair left a bar up the street from their home. Police say the son became hostile and belligeren­t when the car was stopped. Five men were charged with lewd and lascivious conduct Friday and Saturday at the Interstate 95 rest stop in Lower Chichester, state police said.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

With concerns about predatory lending on the rise, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Developmen­t talked to local lenders and Realtors about some improved resources available for homeowners. Roughly 100 industry profession­als attended the two-hour event at the Drexelbroo­k Corporate Events Center. “The housing landscape is going through a period of correction,” said HUD Federal Housing Commission­er Brian Montgomery, referring to what some economists have described as a housing market crisis over the past two years.
