Haverford seeks to fill vacancy on the school board
HAVERFORD » The school district is accepting applications for an interim school director to fill a vacancy created Patricia Giambuzzi’s resignation.
A school director since 2003 and former board vice president, Giambuzzi stepped down for personal reasons, effective June 1.
Solicitor Greg Parker said the Pennsylvania Public School Code provides that when a vacancy occurs remaining members have 30 days to select and appoint by majority vote an elector from the district to fill the position.
Additionally, when a vacancy occurs more than 60 days before a municipal election the appointment would extend through the first Monday in December following the election, in this case Dec. 4, 2017, since municipal elections are slated for Nov. 7.
Parker said he would advise the Delaware County Bureau of Elections of the vacancy.
“They will take appropriate steps to list a special election, if that’s appropriate. I leave that to that agency. It’s beyond the school board’s obligations.”
The Elections Bureau did not respond to a request for further information when contacted Tuesday.
Prior to Giambuzzi’s resignation there were four openings on the board.
An announcement posted to the district’s website states that applications must be received by 4 p.m. June 13.
School directors will review the applications and make a decision thereafter, according to Communications Coordinator Anna Deacon.
To be eligible to serve, applicants must be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens, and residents of the township for a minimum of one year.
Applicants may not hold any forprofit office or position under any government in the district, be engaged in business transactions with the district, or be employed/receive pay for services from the district.
Interested parties are asked to submit a resume, brief statement for basis of interest, and basic qualifications to board Secretary Richard Henderson, School District of Haverford Township, 50 E. Eagle Road, Havertown, PA 19083. Applications may be emailed to rhenderson@ haverfordsd.net or faxed to 610-853-5941.
The next school board meeting is June 15.
