Thieves hit equipment shed of youth football league
CHESTER TOWNSHIP » A local youth athletic group was blindsided by thieves late last week and now, little more than a month from football season, is looking to the community for help.
The Chester Township Cougars Youth Association, which helps young community football players and cheerleaders participate in athletics had their storage shed broken into and equipment stolen late Wednesday night last week.
Chester City Councilman and football coach William Morgan said Monday that not only did the vandals make off with some expensive equipment — helmets can go for nearly $300, he said — but also left gear throw all over the field and in neighbor’s backyards.
“They took out or demolished everything in the shed,” Morgan said. “They pretty much took everything the kids need to function.”
Morgan said missing are at least 15 helmets, 1520 shoulder pads and even trophies will kids’ names on them from last season. He said the tackle pads and other supplies were strewn about the field at Green and Ebright streets in Chester Township.
“Someone had to have some sort of initiative to dismantle everything we have for both the football and the cheerleaders,” Morgan said. “The things we do as a program, there’s no money, everything is the kids.”
“People know how hard it is to run a youth program and for it to be organized. for This is a huge burden.”
