100 Years Ago – 1917: Two men who were convicted before Judge Johnson were sentenced Saturday. A Knoxville, Tenn., man who went on a rampage the night of the Preparedne­ss parade in Chester was given three months more in the county jail. The man was guard at one of the munition plants. Early that evening he loaded himself with intoxicant­s and his revolver with bullets. He was firing indiscrimi­nately and one of his shots took effect in a man’s arm. He was convicted of aggravated assault and battery and carrying concealed weapons. 75 Years Ago – 1942: The bell on the old City Hall Court House rang again July 4. It was the same old bell which on July 4, 1776, pealed forth the tiding that American was free and independen­t. The occasion was the annual program at the old Court House in honor of John Morton, the signer whose action in leaving a sick bed to ride horseback to Philadelph­ia and break the tie of the Pennsylvan­ia delegation by voting for Independen­ce meant so much to the people of the nation.

50 Years Ago – 1967: “Let Hertz put you in the driver’s seat.” Burglars took that slogan to heart Thursday night and stole three cars from the Hertz Rental Service in Chester. A company spokesman told police the vehicles were taken from the lot, 1023 W. Ninth St., between 6 p.m. Thursday and 4:30 a.m. today.

25 Years Ago – 1992: Correspond­ent Christian Thompson asked at the Acme in Folsom: “Do you think U.S. troops should be sent to stop the war in Yugoslavia?” Jim Brennan of Prospect Park, retired draftsman, responded: “Definitely not. We’ve been in enough Bush wars. I think we could spend the money elsewhere.” Reed Pridgen of Norwood, airline worker, said “Why not? We send them everywhere else. If it’s going to keep peace …”

10 Years Ago – 2007: Virginia authoritie­s are looking for a former Millbourne man suspected of stealing money from a Payless Shoe store safe. He allegedly used his position to embezzle money from the store’s safe and bank bag. Until recently, the man lived in Millbourne and was employed by the George W. Hill Correction­al Facility. According to John Reilly, acting prison superinten­dent, he was dismissed from his job at the prison about three weeks ago. A day later, prison officials received the warrant for his arrest, Reilly said.
