- Harry Chaykun In the Community

The Haverford Township 14U softball team recently won the Pennsylvania Babe Ruth championship.

Among the members of the team were Lauren Bergmann, Hannah Hermansen, Keira Bauer, Alexandria Varella, Jules McGeehan, Hallie Funch, Laura Seavey, Hayley Gibson, Katie Lenz, Claudia Stuck, Alexa Hoffman and Marissa Cunningham.

Greg Cunningham was the team’s head coach. Bob Gibson, Bob Bergmann and Jim Bauer were the assistant coaches.

A crew of baseball from District 1 worked the PIAA Class 5A championship game at Penn State University last month. Greater Latrobe defeated Whitehall, 7-1, in the game, which was stopped in the sixth inning because of a rainstorm.

David Cohen of Berwyn called balls and strikes, Dave Splain of Wallingford worked first base, Archbishop Carroll graduate Joe Cassidy of Mullica Hill, New Jersey called the plays at second base, and Edgar Zayas of Havertown was at third base.

All four are veteran members of the Delco Baseball League umpiring staff. Splain is president of the Delaware County Chapter of PIAA Baseball Umpires, and Cohen is that group’s rules interpreter. Zayas is president of the Del-Mont CYO Football Officials Association, and Cassidy is associate

umpires head coach of men’s basketball at Rowan University.

The Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum in Radnor is featuring one of the cards from its newest collection of top county sports figures each week on the museum’s website at www.sportslegendsofdelawarecounty.com.

The featured card this week is that of Havertown native Ryan Mulhern, who played ice hockey at Malvern Prep and Brown University before being drafted by the NHL’s Calgary Flames.

He was an American Hockey League (AHL) allstar, and in 1997 played three games with the Washington Capitals.

The Sports Legends Museum, which is located at 301 Iven Avenue in Radnor, is continuing its drive to raise funds to have a statue erected of Radnor High graduate Emlen Tunnell, a World War II hero and the first African-American elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Museum curator Jim Vankoski is seeking sponsors for individual cards in an Emlen Tunnell card set. Sponsorships cost $200 and will be tax-deductible.

For additional information, contact Vankoski at 610-909-4919 or visit www.sportslegendsofdelawarecounty.com or www. emlentunnell.com.

Recently, Vankoski received a letter from Paul Krause, a member of the NFL Hall of Fame who broke Tunnell’s NFL record for career interceptions while playing for the Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings.

“Emlen was a friend and great NFL player,” Krause wrote. “We both went to the University of Iowa and became friends during my early NFL years. He was not only a great player, but he fought for our country.

“I am very proud of him, and it was an honor to break his interception record.”

The Sports Legends Museum will host its fall Sports Cavalcade of Stars luncheon at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16.

The athletes featured on the Museum’s latest card set have been invited to attend, and Vankoski has received recent commitments from former Villanova football coach Andy Talley, ex-Villanova track star George Sydnor, auto racing driver Mares Stellfox, and former professional boxer Mike Picciotti.

They will join former University of Wisconsin men’s basketball coach Bo Ryan, retired NBA referee Joe Crawford, ParaOlympics gold medalist Dr. Eddie Coyle, former professional boxer Fredia Gibbs, and Saint Joseph’s University men’s basketball coach Phil Martelli among the special guests.

Tickets are $25, and only 100 will be available. Anyone purchasing a ticket will receive a 2017 Sports Legends of Delaware County card set.

For reservations, call Vankoski at 610-909-4919.
