100 Years Ago – 1917: Employees of the Folsom car barn, of the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Co., will have a flag raising on Saturday, July 29. Citizens of adjoining communities are expected to lend their patriotism on that occasion. By adjournment tonight or tomorrow, the Senate will have passed the food control bill, establishing virtually a food dictatorship for the world. Anticipating food control, Herbert Hoover has rented one of Washington’s largest hotel buildings together with nearby smaller structures. Expansion of the food administration force to 2,000 employees has already begun. 75 Years Ago – 1942: Acting on complaint registered by James Faddis, occupant of a cabin in the old quarry north of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, that he was being annoyed by a group of “nonworkers” who stage daily drinking parties in that section, three patrolmen rounded up five members of the gang. Faddis, who recently was discharged from the hospital following a major operation, testified that the men not only annoyed and threatened him with rough usage, but had helped themselves to vegetables from his garden. Magistrate Lowery committed the men to 90 days in Broadmeadows. 50 Years Ago – 1967:

Some 9,000 color television set owners and their families may be exposed to harmful radioactive rays from their sets, says the government. It urged the unknown owners of the large-screen color consoles and table models manufactured by the General Electric Co. and sold between Sept. 1, 1966 and May 31, 1967 to pull the plugs and keep their television screens dark pending a check on possible radioactivity.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Let the record show: Vice President Dan Quayle had nothing to do with the misspelling of his name on tickets welcoming President Bush to Philadelphia yesterday. “Admit one family. A presidential welcome,” the tickets states. At the bottom: “Paid for by Bush-Quale 92.” Quayle’s own spelling has been the subject of jokes for weeks since he told a school boy he needed to add an “e” to the boy’s correct spelling of “potato.”

10 Years Ago – 2007: A 19-year-old man has been charged with stealing gaming systems and video games from the Gamelink store on Ludlow Street, Upper Darby, then selling the stolen goods on the streets of Philadelphia.
