MRC rallies to claim Hook/Furey crown

-

A setback in the first game of the Marcus Hook/Furey Road championship series was but a minor obstacle for MRC Friday night.

MRC rallied to take the final two games over E.J. Hosbach/UBBIBC in the best-of-3 finals.

UBBIBC took the opener, 14-8, but MRC recovered with wins of 13-12 and a decisive 16-4 to clinch the title.

Matt Grossi went 4-for-4 in Game 2 with three runs scored. Kenny Elkind and CJ Boyle each went 3-for-4. Joe Pace got the win, and Rocco Pace stopped the bleeding in the seventh inning, short-circuiting a six-run rally by Hosbach that made things interesting.

MRC made sure the rubber match wasn’t quite as close. Calvin Butcher and Mike Morrissey each went 3-for-3 and combined for seven RBIs. Matt Grossi homered, and Norm Donkin and Kevin Kelly each went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Keenan Wing was the winning hurler. In the Delco Christian League: It’s three times the charm for UTC Union, which used a walkoff hit to win Game 3 of the bestof-5 finals series, 7-6 over DVR, and sweep its way to a third straight Delco Christian League title.

UTC Union won all three games in their final at-bat, with Mike Simone providing the team’s second walk-off hit of the series.

UTC trailed 6-2 through six and a half innings thanks to the efforts of DVR’s Rob Mangel on the mound. But the breakthrough came with UTC down three and down to its final out.

Chris Aaron, Jim Blickley and Brian Ursone singled, then Mike Hagner’s base knock tied the game at six. Simone delivered the gamewinner, backing a solid pitching effort by Frank Ursone.
