100 Years Ago – 1917:

Quietude again reigned in Chester last night and the police and extra officers had little to do to break the monotony of the sultry evening. There has been no letup in the vigilance of all the officials regarding preventati­ve regulation­s against further rioting, and neither had there been any announceme­nt concerning the withdraw of the state troopers and deputy sheriffs from the city.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

The Sun Shipbuildi­ng and Drydock Co. attained its July goal of five launchings when the $3,000,000 tanker S.S. Princeton slid down the ways and into the Delaware on Friday. The keel of the ship was laid in December and it is being delivered to its owners, the U.S. Maritime Commission, well ahead of schedule. The launching was held up for a half-hour due to the sudden storm.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

A Marine sergeant from Upper Darby, wounded five times during military service in Korea and Vietnam, was honored by both Houses of the Pennsylvan­ia General Assembly. Sgt. Edward Crawford received a standing ovation after he was introduced in the Senate by state Sen. Clyde R. Dengler, R-26 of Upper Darby, and in the House by state Rep. Frank J. Lynch, R-Upper Darby. Crawford’s military service dates from 1945 when he enlisted in the Marine Corps.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

According to plans by the Chester Housing Authority for Chester Towers I and II, the two 14-story pediments where seniors had, until recently, lived in sub-standard settings, will soon fall to make way for an “open space designed to promote social interactio­n” that “aims at facilitati­ng the creation of a flourishin­g urban passage” into the heart of downtown. The authority plans to build three new lower-rise buildings on the site with 120 housing units, office and commercial space, plus a new section of 11th Street connecting Madison Avenue and the Avenue of the States.
