Nether-Swarthmore celebrates state regional 9U title
The Nether-Swarthmore team defeated Doylestown, 3-1, to win the Cal Ripken 9U Southeast Pennsylvania baseball championship in a tournament held at Central Perkiomen Field
The team was the first representing the Nether Swarthmore Baseball organization to win a state regional championship as well as qualifying for the Mid-Atlantic Tournament.
Among the members of the team were Dylan Zeitz, Alexander Selverian, Matthew Caputo, Luke D’Ancona, Brady Nangle, Henry Strauss, Preston Jenson, Caden Shuster, Jackson Green, Shane Green and Mark Ball.
Dave Caputo was the team’s head coach, and Tom Ball, Dave Shuster, Ed Strauss and Eric Green were the assistant coaches. recently.
Kate Refsnyder, an Interboro High All-Delco softball player, has been named head softball coach at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. She spent the last four years as an assistant coach at Brown University.
Refsnyder, who was head coach at Archbishop Carroll High in 2007, spent two years as head coach at Albright College and has been an assistant coach at Coastal Carolina University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania and East Stroudsburg University.
She was a four-year player at Wagner College, helping the Seahawks to a 30-18 record, hitting .303, and posting a 2.25 earned run average as a senior in 2005.
Refsnyder earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Wagner and a master’s degree in sports management from East Stroudsburg.
“I’m honored and ecstatic to be the next softball coach at Hamilton,” the Prospect Park native said. “This is a very exciting time to be joining the Hamilton community. I can’t wait to get started.”
The Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum in Radnor is featuring one of the cards from its newest collection of top county sports figures each week on the museum’s website at www.sportslegendsofdelawarecounty.com.
The featured card this week is that of former boxer Mike Picciotti, the Ridley High graduate who was Philadelphia Golden Gloves lightweight champion before turning professional.
He had a pro record of 304, with 16 of his victories coming by knockout, He competed on a number of cards at the Spectrum in Philadelphia as well as in Atlantic City and was ranked as high as No. 10 in the world in the junior welterweight division. He retired in 1986 after a cut over his eye cost him a shot at a championship bout.
Picciotti will be among those attending the Sports Legends Museum’s Sports Cavalcade of Stars luncheon at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16. Tickets are $25, and only 100 will be available. Anyone purchasing a ticket will receive a 2017 Sports Legends of Delaware County card set.

The Sports Legends Museum, which is located at 301 Iven Avenue in Radnor, is continuing its drive to raise funds to have a statue erected of Radnor High graduate Emlen Tunnell, a World War II hero and the first AfricanAmerican elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Vankoski is seeking sponsors for individual cards in an Emlen Tunnell card set. Sponsorships cost $200 and will be tax-deductible.

The Sports Legends Museum will have a black windbreaker worn by Pittsburgh Pirates manger Danny Murtaugh during the 1964 National League season on display through the month of August.
The piece of memorabilia is displayed courtesy of Patrick Newlin, nephew of Murtaugh, the Chester High graduate who played in the major leagues for nine seasons and was manager of the Pirates for 15 seasons, winning the World Series in 1960 and 1971.

A number of Saint Joseph’s University athletes from Delaware County have been named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s 2017 Spring Honor Roll for having a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Among the honorees were baseball player Matt Morella (Haverford High) and cross country and track runners Brendan Tarte, a Brookhaven resident from Archmere Academy, Media’s Jack Daly (St. Joseph’s Prep) and Dan Savage of Glenolden (Cardinal O’Hara).
Also honored were men’s tennis player Nicholas Ringle (Strath Haven) women’s basketball players Alyssa Monaghan (Monsignor Bonner & Archbishop Prendergast) and Mackenzie Rule (Cardinal O’Hara), and women’s lacrosse players Aly Gormley (Springfield) and Nora McCallion (Academy of Notre Dame).
