Collingdale woman admits stabbing babysitter, 8
MEDIA COURTHOUSE » A Collingdale woman who stabbed an 8-year-old in the head over an apparent disagreement about babysitting was sentenced to one year less a day to two years less a day in the county prison Thursday after pleading guilty to aggravated assault.
Majeah Bashir, 21, was also ordered to serve eight years of consecutive probation under the negotiated plea worked out by Assistant District Attorney Danielle Gallaher and defense counsel Jack McMahon. Bashir was arrested Feb. 17 after police were called to an apartment building in the 500 block of MacDade Boulevard. Her hands were “covered in blood,” according to a release from the Collingdale Police Department.
The incident occurred about 4 p.m. as the 8-yearold girl was babysitting Bashir’s child. The stabbing reportedly resulted from a dispute among the tenants of the first and second floors in the hallway of the apartment building, with the girl becoming the unintended victim of a 4-inch laceration across her forehead.
Responding officers reportedly encountered the young girl being carried hurriedly outside and bleeding severely from her head. She was rushed to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital before she was transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
McMahon noted his client has previously worked in day care and as a residential adviser at Dunwoody Village in West Chester. He said he believed she would benefit from a mental health evaluation.
“I am a nice girl, I never got in trouble before,” Bashir told Delaware County Court of Common Pleas Judge Mary Alice Brennan. “I’m a loving, caring person. I have compassion. …This incident was a mistake. I think I deserve a second chance.”
Bashir was given credit for time served from Feb. 17 to Thursday. She was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation and attend anger management classes, and is not to have any contact with the victim or her immediate family, under the negotiated plea.
