100 Years Ago – 1917:

While acting in the role of peacemaker during the course of a dispute, Mrs. Helen Hicks, aged 20 years, of Leiper Flats, Ridley Township, received a gunshot wound in the right hip. She was sent to the Chester hospital. Her condition is not serious. Two men, who are alleged to have been fighting in the women’s home, were arrested. The man who allegedly fired the shot was sent to Chester City Hall, while the other man was jailed in Leipervill­e. 75 Years Ago – 1942: The football season was officially opened in the Delaware County Hospital yesterday when two boys were treated for injuries. Upper Darby’s first victim of the 1942-43 season was Richard Howell, 6, of 276 S. Highland Blvd., Brookline, who received two broken ribs when he landed at the bottom of a pile in scrimmage. Victim No. 2 was Charles Smith, 15, of 7007 Penarth Ave., Bywood, who broke his right thumb practicing with the Upper Darby High School squad.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Chester’s elementary schools apparently are not overcrowde­d. In fact, the school district has fewer elementary pupils now than it did at the close of school last June, according to Schools Superinten­dent John J. Vaul. Some 6,908 pupils have enrolled so far this month in the district’s 12 elementary schools, Vaul said. Chester had 6,923 elementary pupils last June.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Continuing the celebratio­n of the borough’s 100th birthday, Marcus Hook residents, members of the centennial committee and borough officials decided to big a hole. In 100 years, buried right next to the flag pole in front of borough hall, space-age borough council members will find their history in a time capsule. Coffee mugs, election buttons, currency, newspaper clippings and nearly 100 photograph­s will capture borough history from 1892 to present. Businesses have also donated to the future curio.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

Selling 14 packets of suspected heroin to undercover officers landed a Havertown man in jail, Upper Darby police said. The 58-year-old was arrested at his home Sept. 5 by Upper Darby police with assistance from Haverford police. “We had his house under surveillan­ce and had a warrant for his arrest,” Police Superinten­dent Michael Chitwood said. “He was coming to Upper Darby and selling a lot of heroin. They sell and we lock them up.”
