100 Years Ago – 1917: Another arrest has been made in the Eddystone Ammunition Corp. explosion case. A Russian girl believed to be the wife of the man who is suspected to be the mastermind back of a plot to destroy the huge shell plant was nabbed by the Chicago police. At the time of the explosion, she was employed as a stenograph­er at the Eddystone plant.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

While feeding a squirrel in the yard of his home, James N. Lang, 8, of 17 Bishop Ave., Drexel Hill, was bitten on the right index finger. The child was taken to the Delaware County Hospital where the finger was treated. A bucket of sand, kept as a part of air raid protection equipment, prevented damage to a residence at 1713 W. Second St., Chester, following an oil stove explosion. The sand was thrown on the blazing oil, extinguish­ing it before firemen arrived.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Three 1,000 pound steers broke loose from Medford’s Inc. slaughterh­ouse, Second and Market streets, Chester, about 10 a.m. today and caused near panic in the downtown business district. Two of them were cornered about 10:45 a.m. in Sun Shipbuildi­ng & Dry Dock Co.’s Shop No. 1 parking lot on Upland Street, between Sixths and Seventh streets, and shot by Detective Charles Emmanuel. The third steer was trapped inside Sun Ship’s Shop No. 2 nearby, and Medford’s officials recaptured it about 11:30 a.m.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Delaware County’s pride – in the form of a few thousand of its residents volunteeri­ng to clean up their respective communitie­s – cast a light on Saturday every bit as bright as the 80-degree sunshine under which they worked. The park cleanings, building renovation­s and historical preservati­on work in 33 municipali­ties was all part of the county’s contributi­on to the “Take Pride in America” program, administer­ed by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

Incumbent Republican Chester Mayor Wendell N. Butler Jr. stood outside of the now-shuttered Crozer Pub, directly across from Crozer-Chester Medical Center in the 300 block of West 15th Street, to announce the results of an ongoing initiative to address nuisance bars in the city.
