RTM students’ murals go on display at library
MIDDLETOWN » Children’s artwork is no longer just for the refrigerator.
Students at Rose Tree Elementary School created a series of murals this spring which are on display in the Media-Upper Providence Library. The project was recapped as part of the recent Rose Tree Media School Board meeting.
Organized and facilitated by art teacher Hannah Richardson, the goal was to engage every student in creating a piece of art to enrich a spot in the community. Fourth and fifth graders examined a range of murals to determine themes and viewed a short video about the library’s events, then designed their images.
Art teacher Hannah Richardson organized the sketches into five panels and water color mock-ups allowed the students to see how their drawings contributed to the whole. Several quotes related to reading were added to adorn the outer edges and the murals were expanded into 5-foot panels. Second-fifth graders used the models as a guide to paint the larger panels, while kindergarteners and first-graders filled the background and borders.
“It was simply wonderful to watch each of the students contribute to the mural,” said Richardson. “Each student painted with a sense of ownership and pride and they really wanted the mural to be a beautiful addition to new library in their community.”
