Powell and Widener pick up where they left off

For the second time in five games Widener defensive back Jordan Powell was at his ball-hawking best Saturday.

Powell had two intercepti­ons, including his second pick-six of the season, as the Pride forced three turnovers in a 30-7 romp at Wilkes.

Both of Powell’s intercepti­ons came in the third quarter and helped the Pride (4-2 overall, 4-1 MAC) open up a 23-0 lead. Powell stepped in front of a Wade Rippeonpas­s and returned it 36 yards for his second touchdown return of the season. He then picked off a Nicholas Geimer pass later in the quarter.

In addition to the two picks, Powell had seven tackles (five solo) and broke up a pass.

Meanwhile, quarterbac­k Graham Jespersen threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score as the Pride topped the 400-yard mark in total offense (406) for the second straight week.

The previous effort coming last Saturday in a 28-20 win over Lebanon Valley.

Jespersen tossed a 26-yard TD pass to Sapp in the first quarter to get Widener on the board and then hooked up with Montrell Hicks-Taylor on an 82-yard pitch-and-catch for the Pride’s final score of the day. Stevens turned a fumble recovery into a 12-yard TD run by Amajio Evans for a 14-0 lead. Maquel Wansley then returned an intercepti­on 86 yards as time expired in the second quarter to put the visitors up 33-7 at halftime.

Vince DelPercio completed 9 of 18 passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Mechanics. LOCK HAVEN 62, CHEYNEY 0 » Kyle Knight ran for 181 yards and four touchdowns, and Corey Blakely added 122 yards and one score as the Bald Eagles (1-5, 1-2, PSAC East) piled up a school-record 460 yards on the ground for their first win of the season.

Not much went right for the Wolves (1-5, 0-3). Cheyney turned the ball over four times (three intercepti­ons, one fumble) and managed 267 yards of total offense. Yves Ferdinand had eight catches for 106 yards.
