100 Years Ago – 1917: Pickpocket­s invaded the theatrical district near Seventh Street and Edgmont Avenue in Chester Saturday night and, according to complaints made at the city hall police station, the light-fingered gentlemen made several good hauls. Among the reports made of missing wallets were those of Max Rosboski of 800 E. Seventh St., who lost $50; William Moore, 720 E. Sixth St., $18 cash and a money order for $5; and Mr. C.L. Rucker of Eddystone, $20.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

President Roosevelt today presented to Edwin F. Cheney Jr. the first Merchant Marine Distinguis­hed Service Medal of this war for his heroic feat of swimming under blazing oil to rescue six of his tanker shipmates. Cheney, a 25-year-old seaman from Yeadon, made the rescue after the tanker John D. Gill was torpedoed on the night of March 12. Cheney has served aboard tankers or three years and now holds the rank of boatswain. He hopes soon to become a third mate.

50 Years Ago – 1967: The Times will begin a 12-part series next week entitled “Letters to a Son in Uniform,” written by Henry Gregor Felsen, author of 28 books mostly about teenagers. They are written to his son during his four years in the Marine Corps.

25 Years Ago – 1992: The Springfiel­d Zoning Board hearing on the proposed Argyles Recreation Center scheduled for tonight has been continued until Oct. 22. The bearing centers on John B. Pelosi’s proposal to put a multiuse recreation center into the burned-out Acme Market on Chester Road, requesting a use variance to operate a banquet room, children’s fitness center, indoor minigolf course, billiard room and a snack bar. Over 250 people, mostly residents from Ridley township and Swarthmore, attended a prior hearing to voice their opposition. The property is located in Springfiel­d’s third Ward, but is surrounded by Ridley Township and abuts Swarthmore.

10 Years Ago – 2007: Brookhaven council, at the suggestion of Councilman Vawn Donaway, agreed to write letters to local and state legislator­s, as well as Gov. Ed Rendell, requesting legislatio­n be crafted to change the current method of electing members to the Penn-Delco School Board. Currently, board members are elected at large, with no criteria for guaranteed equal representa­tion from the communitie­s of Aston, Brookhaven and Parkside.
