100 Years Ago – 1917: Street car traffic was delayed for nearly a half hour shortly before midnight when the trolley wire broke underneath the bridge at Sixth Street and Edgmont Avenue. Eight cars were lined up on Market Street and homeward bound passengers were compelled to wait until repairs were made.

75 Years Ago – 1942: A warning to the public to protect themselves against the common cold, which at the present time seems to be more prevalent than generally at this time of the year was issued today by Tim McCarey, public health officer. “We are morally obliged to protect our health today more than at any other time,” Mr. McCarey said. “With so many of our physicians being inducted into the armed services, and those who are not being taken by the services being heavily burdened, we cannot be too careful.” 50 Years Ago – 1967: Delaware County was raised to Second Class status Wednesday, but accompanyi­ng pay boosters for county officials won’t go up until Jan. 1. The county commission­ers received a proclamati­on from Gov. Raymond P. Shafer changing the county’s status from Third Class to Second Class A. Montgomery County also became a 2A county at the same time under a bill passed by the state Legislatur­e and signed Oct. 20 by Shafer. Under the 2A-class, Delaware County would be authorized to raise annual salaries of its elected officials from a total estimated $123,480 to an estimated $243,000 a $119,520 jump. County commission­ers’ salaries would increase from the present $11,250 a year to $22,200, with the chairman receiving $25,800. 25 Years Ago – 1992: Extensive preparatio­ns for President Bush’s second visit to Delaware County in 22 days continued yesterday with hundreds of excited Darby Township residents sacrificin­g their weekend to make today’s political rally at the

10 Years Ago – 2007: A Media man took home the grand prize of $5,0000 in the Great Expectatio­ns “Hopes and Fears” film competitio­n. Richard Hoffmann, 33, won first place for his film “Prayer for Philadelph­ia.” He was among seven finalists competing for the top prize, The winner of the competitio­n was announced last Saturday at the Prince Music Theater. Hoffman is a 1996 graduate of New York University. He returned to Delaware County, to start the film and video company, Coyopa Production­s.
