Veterans, first responders memorial ceremony set for Sunday in Concord
CONCORD » The Concord Township American Hero Memorial holds its Veterans Day Ceremony at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov 5, at the memorial on Smithbridge Road next to the Rachel Kohl Library (if there is rain, the ceremony moves to the library). Come out to honor those who serve, or who have served, in the military or as emergency responders.
The Concord Township American Hero Memorial (CTAHM) was conceptualized after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The motto for this effort was “in appreciation for those who willfully accept the responsibility to serve and defend the nation.”
Initially started by President Wilson in 1919 to commemorate the Armistice ending hostilities of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day under President Eisenhower in 1954 to honor veterans of all wars.
The CTAHM holds its ceremony on the Sunday preceding Veterans Day each year and includes emergency responders as well as other community groups, including the Boy Scouts of America. The date of the ceremony allows veterans, their families, and other community members to participate in other county, regional and national Veterans Day ceremonies on Veterans Day itself.
For information and volunteer opportunities with the memorial, call Marty Frick at 610-361-9397. Memorial bricks are still available; contact Dave Montville at 610-358-9776 or via email dlmontville@gmail.com

Duffy’s Cut doc now available
“The Cut: The Journey of the Men and Women of Duffy’s Cut,” produced by Joe Magee, Roger Bruce and Art Swanlund of Irish American Films and directed by Shawn Swords with William Watson, Ph.D., professor of History at Immaculata University, serving as historical consultant in addition to his role as director of the Duffy’s Cut Project, is now available to view online and for sale on DVD.
“The Cut” The Journey of the Men and Women of Duffy’s Cut,” is a feature length documentary film about the 57 Irish railroad workers who arrived in Philadelphia to build mile 59 of the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad, and died within six to eight weeks of violence and cholera. The Irishmen were from Donegal, Tyrone and Derry in Ulster, with an average age of 22. A project, headed by Prof. Watson and his brother, the Rev. Frank Watson, has been underway since 2002 to locate the graves of these workers and properly rebury them. To date, the graves of seven workers have been excavated. Work is ongoing to recover the remaining fifty bodies.
“This documentary is the newest and most extensive coverage of the Duffy’s Cut story and it places the events at Duffy’s Cut in the context of other 1832-era deaths of Irish immigrant laborers elsewhere in Chester County,” said Prof. Watson. The film discusses the possibility of the site being the location of the worst mass murder in Pennsylvania history.
“The Cut: The Journey of The Men and Women of Duffy’s Cut” is now for sale on DVD at www.irishamericanfilms.com/shop and to view online for $4.99 at https://gum.co/OQijN
